Depending on your trailer usage it should be serviced every 6-12 months.

Wheel bearings should be adjusted and repacked with a high quality grease at least every 6-12 months.

Regularly check that all lights are working correctly.

Check / tighten spring bolts, u bolts, wheel nuts including the spare, coupling bolts, body mounting bolts, safety chain and door hinge bolts.

Apply a good quality general purpose lubricant eg white lithium grease on a regular basis to the door hinges, locks, jockey wheel and coupling.

If your trailer is fitted with brakes check the brake pads / shoes for wear. Check for leaks and top up the brake fluid if necessary.

Check tyre pressures including the spare tyre every few months or before a long journey.

Jack the trailer up and spin the wheels, remember to put axle stands under the axle for your safety. Listen for any rumbling noises or rough rotation which could indicate worn or loose wheel bearings. Firmly grasp each tyre and check for movement side to side as well as top to bottom. If any movement is felt, the bearing will need to be adjusted.

Before embarking on a long journey with your trailer give it a thought check as you are responsible for the safety of your trailer. Make sure you know what the weight of the load is and the carrying capacity of the trailer also the towing capacity of the tow vehicle braked / unbraked.

Always keep the trailers warrant of fitness and registration up to date.

Always wash your trailer after excessive exposure to corrosive chemicals and salt water these will shorten the life of the galvanized trailer frame and components.

Fiberglass is a very strong and durable product however it should be cleaned and maintained on a regular basis. If the trailer is kept dry and under cover away from the elements, then exposure is minimal and the fiberglass can be maintained yearly or so with great results unlike paint. However if the vehicle is kept out in the elements under constant exposure, then regular cleaning should be done every few months without fail.

Use a good quality polish as this will help rub off some of the oxidation and will keep your trailer looking like new. Polishing compounds are a similar product which have more abrasives and can remove heavier oxidation but do not provide any protection afterwards, so you need to apply some protective coating after cleaning (preferably a good quality wax so the process doesn’t begin again).

Remember doing regular maintenance on your trailer means it’s a safe and reliable trailer.
